The Cressvale County Commission, District 2 seat is open because the current commissioner is not seeking another term. Martha Halenwick, a Democrat, and Nora Caldridge, a Republican, are the two candidates in the November 3, 2026 general election.
County commissioners make decisions about the county budget, locally controlled services, roads and facilities, and county land-use rules. The commission is distinct from municipal councils and the school system. Candidates can propose coordination with those institutions, but should not be described as directly controlling them.
How the race developed
Halenwick launched on March 24 with an emphasis on early planning, partnerships, and measurable county investment. Caldridge launched on March 26 emphasizing core services, infrastructure capacity, predictable rules, and accountable spending.
An April 14 county budget work session established the figures that later shaped the race: an $18.4 million current sheriff operating budget, a $12.6 million current locally controlled county health-services budget, and a separate $1.8 million annual sheriff expansion request.
At the May 19 joint forum, both candidates presented reallocations. Halenwick would move $1.8 million from the sheriff baseline to county health. Caldridge would cut county health by $2.8 million, fund the sheriff request with $1.8 million, and apply the remaining $1 million to her tax target. Clarifications on May 21 and May 22 identified the service effects each candidate accepts.
On June 3 both candidates answered the E-Gazette’s five-question questionnaire. The Housing Coalition endorsed Halenwick on June 11, with a reservation about housing-program targets and reporting. Concerned Citizens endorsed Caldridge on June 13, with a reservation about planning and measuring the county-health transition.
